2011 NBA Mock Draft: Can Terrence Jones Replace LeBron James for Cleveland?

Terrence Jones replaces LeBron James in our Mock Draft. 8. Cleveland Cavaliers – Terrence Jones, SF, Kentucky, 6-8, 226 Okay, here is the Cavalier lineup at current (‘at current' representative of the state of things now at the 8th pick of this mock): PG- Kyrie Irving, Ramon Session SG- Boobie Gibson, Christian Eyenga, Manny Harris SF- Alonzo Gee, Christian Eyenga PF- J.J. Hickson, Antawn Jamison, Luke Harangody, Samardo Samuels C- Andy Varejao, Semih Erden, Ryan Hollins Okay, you're not looking at the 2011 Eastern Conference champions or anything…but there are some players on that roster who are at the very least solid. What stands out to me looking at the roster, and it was plenty evident this season, is that we have a gaping hole at the 3. Explicable though it is, the LeBron James spot needs filling. In 2010-11, Byron Scott has experimented with a myriad of starting lineups all in an effort to cover up that particular shortcoming, and while some have worked offensively, each has served to hinder us defensively. I don't want to pretend that the Cavs are an adequate 3 away from fielding a competitive defensive team#8212;they're not#8212;but it would start to address what has become a staggering inability to keep anybody out of the paint. So a 3, and preferably, one defensively capable. The answer to me is obivious#8212;with Harrison Barnes and Perry Jones off the board, the Cavs would potentially be making out with Terrence Jones. There was a time earlier in the year that Jones was looking like the number one NBA prospect in the country (as recently as December). He is aggressive, athletic, and sports a 7-3 wingspan (which is pretty outrageous). The 19-year-old Wildcat was one of the top recruits for notoriously good-taste'd recruiter John Calipari, and is the type of versatile, good passing, ball-handling lefty that conjures images of Lamar Odom. Only Terrence plays a lot meaner than Lamar. The reason he's available at number eight is that he's streaky. After getting off to a torrid start for the Wildcats (20 pts, 10.2 reb, 2.5 ast on 50% shooting, 44% 3pt in his first six games), Jones has tailed off a bit. More than a bit really, he's in a pretty substantial slump. He's averaging just 11 ppg thus far in the NCAA Tournament and is still struggling with his perimeter shot#8212;quite possibly the ugliest stroke this side of Joakim Noah#8212;but in my opinion he's also demonstrating his value. Even when his stroke is MIA, there remain a number of ways he's capable of being effective. He's strong with an NBA body and is capable of bullying his way to the rim, and is always a threat to clean up on the glass. His shooting being off never really needs to take him out of a game, and if he ever finds a way to hit more consistently, he's a legitimate All-Star prospect. For the Cavs, in Byron Scott's Princeton Offense everyone creates for everyone, adding a versatile, ball handling 3 like TJ would be a coup. Kyrie Irving and Terrence Jones. Basketball gods, get to work. (Previous pick: Jonas Valanciunas – Detroit Pistons) (Upcoming pick: … – Milwaukee Bucks)
