NBA: Remaining Free Agents

So, who's still out there? Ron Artest has gone from Houston to L.A., and Trevor Ariza did the opposite. Mike Bibby, Carlos Boozer, Anderson Varejao, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, and Mehmet Okur all resigned. Detroit took Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva and lost Rasheed Wallace to Boston. Hedo Turkoglu went to Toronto, which forced the Raptors to send Shawn Marion to Dallas. So, who is still available to sign? Allen Iverson This All-Star doesn't seem like an obvious choice for most teams and for good reason. After being traded from Denver, the Nuggets became the No. 2 team in the West, and Detroit fell to almost being out of the playoffs. Despite recent history, Iverson isn't done in the NBA. Any team that picks up Iverson would immediately get better. His ego is outweighed by his skill, eliminating his only criticism. He is not a bad player by any means, and even though Billups turned out to be a more valuable player, Iverson can still help playoff-contending team. Lamar Odom The man does have his ring, and returning to L.A. seems like his best option. But, if another team becames interested in this rising star, then his future could be bright with a young, developing team. Andre Miller The first player to be traded for Iverson has done well in Philadelphia, and he is a skilled point guard. He no longer has star potential, but if all a team needs is a solid point guard, then Miller would be a good acquisition. Drew Gooden The former starter for the Bulls became a Spur last year, and he was less than extraordinary. However, while he has been around for seven years, he's only 27. One bad season does not have to define his career; he can still play in the league for another decade. A young 6'10" player is always going to be helpful to a team like Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Sacramento, and even the young Chicago, if he wants to go back. Restricted Free Agents While these players are likely to resign with their current teams, you have to consider them somewhat up for grabs. There are quite a few players that fall into this category, and even though not all these players are technically "restricted free agents," all of them have some sort of restriction on their free agent status. To name a few (in alphabetical order): Kwame Brown, Will Bynum, Glen Davis, Ike Diogu, Raymond Felton, Channing Frye, Marcin Gortat, Aaron Gray, Walter Herrmann, Jarrett Jack, Linas Kleiza, David Lee, Sean May, Rashad McCants, Paul Millsap, Jamario Moon, Jermaine O'Neal, Leon Powe, Nate Robinson, Ramon Sessions, and Mario West. Other Gems You could take a risk on some of these unrestricted free agents, but only time will tell how that will turn out. To name a few (in alphabetical order): Keith Bogans, Rodney Carney, Anthony Carter, Gerald Green, Grant Hill, Bobby Jackson, Tyronn Lue, Stephon Marbury, Desmond Mason, Darius Miles, Mikki Moore, Dikembe Mutombo, Anthony Parker, Joe Smith, Robert Swift, Wally Szczerbiak, and Chris Wilcox. Good luck to all of your favorite teams!
